Topping paddocks is excellent for preventing ragwort and other weeds from going to seed and therefore proliferating. Any re-growth can easily be dealt with. Topping reduces coarse grass and encourage new growth thereby resulting in a higher quality sward. As grass continues to grow when soil temperature is above 6°C, topping should be carried out every 4-6 weeks to keep the grass “sweet” and at the optimum length of 2-3”.
Topping also removes any stalk, unpalatable grass and allows fresh new grass to spread. It also stops grass from growing too tall for effective grazing.
The equipment we use mulches the grass therefore speeding up the breakdown and disappearance of cuttings and improving grass growth. The machine that we use is fairly light weight, therefore having a low ground pressure, reducing damage to meadows and paddocks to a minimum. With the compact nature of the machine and the “zero Turn” capabilities, it keep’s wheel markings and damage to a minimum, also, making it ideal for smaller areas with difficult access.
